With the dropping of End Times: Archaon last week I got a bit distracted and did not post on a game I had last Wednesday.
Greg Greenfield brought over his Ogres and I thought I'd try the Vamps as generally its a matchup that favours the Ogres - given I had no Death magic nor screams. My normal BK has a Wight BSB, a blender Lord and a baby Vamp. I decided to try the new 50% lord allowance and run two blender lords.
We played Blood & Glory and Greg broke me Turn 6 when he got a Zombie Standard, having previously got the BSB and BK standard. It was a very interesting game from my pov - mainly as it reinforced some thoughts I had over the increased character allowance.
They are three types of army when it comes to the higher character allowance.
The first are the "Don't Give A Shit". These make up the majority. Dwarfs, Skaven, Ogres (for the main), Wood Elves, Beastmen, most Daemons, probably TKs are all examples. They don't need the extra allowance in the main. Yes you'll have odd exceptions but spamming a character type is not where it's at - esp with limits on 15 pt engineers.
The second are "Boots and All". The most obvious example are Warriors of Chaos who can happily use up the full 1000 points of lords on fighty characters. Or a Lizardman who thinks spawning of Cold One riding Scar Vets are better in 3-4 (leaving room for Tetto Ekko). The worst offender are - of course - High Elves who want all of the PEG on Star Dragon, Level 4 with Book and Teclis. It is so unfair that they can still only take two...but ET:A fixes that. There is scope for the twin Vamp Lord but having tried It out I'm pretty sure the Lord plus babe is the way to go.
And then you have the third way. The middle path. Or what we call "Dark Elves". It was always so unFair we couldn't have a kitted Dreadlord and Level 4 but now we can. Yes, the rest of the Warhammer World has cottoned onto the fact you can only have so many efficient 188 point Peg Masters but it is nice to have a character with MR to join our fast cav buses rather than spend points on any wasted - non FC of flying - troops. God forbid we put our 12-8 win at risk!
So what does this mind dump say? Well only that the rule isn't really changing things as much as first thought. Yes some WoC and High Elf players will turn up with a second lord but it's not like they are starved for good choices anyway. The Dark Elves will just fine tune their character build probably spending an extra 50-60 points in each category to try and remove any possible risk - I'm sure they must play Space Wolves in another game. The Lizard players will paint a fifth Scar Vet and then realise that they don't actually enjoy it anymore.
And the rest of us will soldier on - fighting the good fight!

ReplyDeleteThat dude sounds like a champ
.
would we say champ? :)
DeleteDE can easily run kitted Dreadlord and Level 4 under 25% at 2400 points.
ReplyDeleteI dont think they "need" the 50% caps to run ok.
I had 552 points in lords (kitted DL & L4) and 352 in heroes for Equinox
Just wait until I spend 1200pt on overpowered Glade Lords, Shadowdancers and Branchwraiths....
ReplyDeleteTypical powergamer Ryan right there!
