High Elf Hangover - Part One

And so over at the High Elf forums it is playing out exactly as I thought it would.

After two weeks of trumpeting the Banner, the Book, the Phoenix, Cav Core etc, they've finally woken up.....and they don't like it!

As I said yesterday - they no longer have any excuses.

So now we are seeing the backtracking, the re-assessment and the outright denial. Suddenly the new book is  MUCH weaker than the old book.

The Twitter campaigns have begun. The infestation of general forums of "just how weak the new book is".

Sorry guys. You've had a substantial upgrade.....now shoulder the expectation.

You won't get comp for six months.......time to perform. But you don't like that do you.

  1. There are few things more terrifying than having no excuses..

  3. So bitter Pete! Ha ha, I’m looking forward to playing the book. Probably won’t be till the end of the year but no excuses here. It’s clearly better than the 7th Ed book. The High Magic lore is significantly better, the Book of Hoeth (your right though I have seen HE players playing this down on twitter saying they’d rather have BOS or the crystal –) it’s probably the best item in the book to allow you to 1 or two dice low casting spells with the reroll. Get an 8 or 9 dice phase and you’ll be able to cast 4 spells (you won’t get them all off but 2 probably and maybe three if the opponent doesn’t manage their dispel pool well). Reavers and Silverhelms in core also makes the book better and removes the “core tax” we all liked to moan about as He players. A bus of 15 Silver Helms 5x3 all attacking on the charge – over the old book of 35 spears? Yes please. As you said to me Pete “just play better” ha ha. It will be interesting to see in the UK if the perceived “top players” pick it up – Dan Heelan or Tom Mawdsley etc.

    1. Bitter? Not at all. I think it is great that they have created such a strong book. Just finding it humorous that after spending two weeks talking it up all HE players are talking it down and have entered campaigning mode.

The Dwarfs have the Book of Grudges.... We now know the High Elves have the Book of Excuses

    2. Lol nice. Its probably made from the beards of scalped dwarfs to. Have you read the whinge post by Furion on Ulthuan forum?
According to him, everything in the book needs to halve in price

    3. I try to avoid the negativity, but I suspect a lot of it has to do with the abundant choice in the book.

When the Empire book came out the internet went "Stank, 2 cannons, Hellblaster with engineer, 2x demigrphs & knight core" within a day.
WoC book and the response was "Nurgle Demonprince + chimeras + skull crushers"

With the High Elf book we are already 4 NZ days into it and there STILL isnt an obvious power build. Why? Because you can cut the book 20 different ways and they are all plausable. What's worse is that the old "power builds" are no longer as powerful as they were, forcing major revision of the orthdoxy. This to me screams "awesome book" and like you said Pete "learn to play".

  4. Race specific forums do this every time. Just like the daemon book its a hell of a lot better than they think.

    1. The TK ones are the worst. Every day there is a new thread about how hard done by TK are.

  5. and the orc players sit back and laugh at you all, because no one takes orcs unless they want to have a really good laugh

  7. I fully expect that my mediocrity will be on full display when I take my High Elves out to play.

I will not blame the army, but instead the need to participate in more than two phases of the game, which I am sure will overwhelm my feeble little mind.

    1. Nice one Tane - I like HE but their desire to move, shoot, compete in combat and cast magic is still confusing and sometimes I find myself trying to play them like Dwarfs.

  8. Pete I take it all back - HE players are whingers. Check out this gem on Ulthuan "Handmaiden of the Everqueen - 95pts. Great hero, great utility, great concept. Should be 50 pts though, which makes her being overpriced twice."

  9. Yup just read that... My god What are they smoking. It's by no means a ultra high power book (sorry Pete it's really not), but to say it's a weaker book, even though every unit got a points decrease and can fight in a extra rank. REALLY!?

though i agree 95pts is slightly on pricey side for said character, it's by no means useless. I'll take one in a couple of lists
