When I bought the new Ogres in late 2011. I thought GW might have jumped the shark with Bragg the Gutsman costing $73.
Well it appears this time they have lined up a whole school! The Throgg special character - again in Finecast - will set you back $113 (or AUD96).
IMO Bragg was a very nice model. This.....I'm not so sure.
Little Timmy better be a good boy this holidays to get Mum and Dad to spring for this.
The Forsaken have also been sighted and colour me unimpressed.
I thought GW might have binned this look after the mistake that was the CSM Possessed Space Marines released in conjunction with the Medusa V campaign. But no....they are back!
The pricepoint of $81 for 10 makes them more expensive than the Empire Greatswords.
Not all bad though - the Dragon Ogres and Chariot both look good and have realistic pricepoints, $94 and $64 respectively. This means that you should be able to pick them up for around NZ$60 and $40 on eBay or a US-based web seller.
It doesn't really matter how much the special character costs if none of you will ever let someone play with one ;)
ReplyDeleteNo there's three we won't let them play with - Kairos, Teclis and Thorek
DeleteYup I played against a Throgg list last year, it was a fun tournament and I enjoyed a bit more variety in the lists taken.

Banning a Dwarf Special Character.
DeleteThe world still looks dim.
Being a Dwarf Special Character.
DeleteThe world still looks dull
I thought Thorek was banned by sheer points that are normally played at.
DeleteNo thoreks banned soleky because he encourages the most boring gunliney army of all time and Dwarves are bad enough at ruining hobbies as is.
DeleteI thought there was one Dwarf Character that breaks the percentage for most normal tournament level games.
DeleteThat might be the king Dwarf thing.

Throgg says "Give me a Hell Yeah"
ReplyDeleteSee I though of it more as a 'We will, we will, rock you!"
Delete:)
Dave A
It looks more like "Finally! Throgg has come back to the Old World"
DeleteThe forsaken are the same price as Empire Greatswords Pete. Along with TK Tomb Guard, Lizard Temple Guard, Phoenix Guard, White Lions, Beastigors, Grave Guard etc...
ReplyDeleteJust about every 10 man special option is released for $81 now
Cheers. They are still dreadful. I'll be using my Pestigors as Forsaken
DeleteLook at the Forsaken...now go watch Pirates of the Caribbean.
ReplyDeleteFlying Dutchman crew anyone?
I heard recently that Chariots are going to be Core (they are listed as such on the webstore). IF this is the case, doesn't that make them awesomely points-slot-price efficient? What's the estimate on points cost... 150pts? 4 of those bad boys would give you the minimum 25% necessary for a 2400pt list right? Circa $256 (or less for eBay buyers as you point out) and painting only 4 models seems like a bargain. Would allow you to go heavy with a knight/dragon ogre bus.
ReplyDeleteThe pricing on the Forsaken is totally justifiable :) Look at the bang you get for your buck - the two head variations with tentacles/snakey bits everywhere will be a crowd favourite, long-hailed as a massive advance in casting technology and the crowning glory of the miniature sculpting profession. "Snake Face" is the best!
On a serious note - the Dragon Ogres do look very sweet. And they're only $31 each. You'll obviously need them as they'll be the chicken/juggernaut/mournfang equivalent that will keep WoC competitive.
In reality what the forsaken box is, is an instant bits box upgrade for all Chaos players in both 40k and Fantasy.
DeleteFujin,
DeleteI think you've forgetting that WoC Bloodcrushers are kings of the monterous cav right now, I can't imagine GW making Dragon Orges better than them, if they do i might actually have to by 6+ ;)then I'll have a couple more bricks for my sock!
But i have to agree with you all the Dragon Orge model does look very nice as does Throgg and the new Chariots!
Lets hope the chariots are all core!
Hi All
ReplyDeleteI have been tempted on giving fantasy or 40k a try for a little while - but have a real issue with the pricing.
My question for people is how strict are people about non gw figures being used? GW as far as i know does not support tournaments or local clubs so I was wondering if there was a degree of leniency on this and how far that leniency stretched.
I would not be using empty plastic bottles for figures..
regards
Peter Hood
Complete leniency Peter.
DeleteA typical Space Marine army is only 50 figures so not so bad - and they have excellent starter set (Dark Vengeance)
Fantasy you need more but Mantic Games do cheap figures and they are improving all the time.
The other thing is that the resale value on GW is much less than historicals so you should never be paying more than 40-50% used and Trade Me and eBay have pages of them (eBay 25000 items at any one time).
Web stores in the States offer good discounts. I'm typically buying at 55% NZRRP. I'd love to buy locally but Games Workshop (the organisation, not the local shop) has a distorted view of currency rates and so there is a 45% discount on offer if you use the net and don't need instant gratification.
The two games are very different. 40k is a skirmish game with typically 50-100 minis. Fantasy is a battle game, more linear and probably more in line with the DBM/FOG model
With the move of chariots to Core I"ll be surprised if we don't see Warrior armies rising up the pecking order.
ReplyDeleteWar shrines are also now a Special choice. 800 points of characters 4 chariots or 3 plus 2x Marauder Horse and rest is Special (knights, skull rushers, shrines, probably DOs) looks a cheap, fast and highly effective army
Funnily enough I've preordered models with that exact army in mind!
DeleteAll Chariot/Chaff core is something I'm very much looking forward to giving a try. Shame that Equinox is running the old book *grumble grumble*
Cheers,
Ross
