Well, with my forgeworld order finally arriving last week, I had some time to put it together and get cracking. As I still didn't have a good feel for how it should come together, I did the first five, and finished them last night during Djokovic's 5 hour get out of jail marathon. Overall I'm quite happy with how they came out. My one regret is that as these are playing pieces, I gave them a very heavy varnish. This killed the dust effect of the rust weathering powders used on the model itself. The base got away a lot better off and retained its dust look. This step wouldn't normally be required to such an extent so would be in a way I am happier with, but overall I am quite satisfied with the finished product.
5 down, 5 to go! How's everyone else getting on with their painting?

Damn you Charlie. I am struggling to find time I'll be honest. There's still an outside chance but it's looking poor!
ReplyDeleteSaw them in the "flesh" today and they are very very nice.
ReplyDeleteI came home looked at my unfinished Death Guard and promptly painted a Vampire Thrall :-(
Just noticed a big unpainted gem on the comms guys backpack, better fix that, what a fail!
ReplyDeleteI really like the bases - subtle sans skulls. Powders?
ReplyDeleteYeah, threw together some cork, added a few bits of plasticard etc, then drybrushed it from black up to white, then threw on a bunch of african earth pigment from MIG, amongst a few bits of track brown here and there too for some variety.
ReplyDeleteSo all the base colour is just pigment?
ReplyDeletekind of. the drybrush you do before hand creates areas of shadow and brightness that will show through the pigment, so is an important step.
ReplyDeletelikewise there are metallics in the random bits of crap that are lying around on the bases.
These look great, you've done a really nice job on them.
ReplyDeleteThe shoulder pads are outstanding. Have you hand painted them? I almost placed a order with FW for some myself, and then remember I've already got some to paint lol. Have a look at some of mine some time. http://www.chaptermasters.com
ReplyDeleteWhich Pads? The left pad (their left) is a forge world SoH MKII pad. The right pad is hand painted, but the XVI roman numerals are a decal, applied using this method: http://www.thefieldsofblood.com/2011/06/shine-on-you-crazy-decal.html
DeleteNice looking figures on your blog, it's always nice seeing people come up with ways to make ultras look interesting :D
Looking good.
DeleteI'm at same stage as you 5 down 5 to go. But suffering from the lack of Emperors Children transfer sheet, so may leave the numbering off the left shoulder until that gets produced. The purple I used for the main armour is a bit dark still, so I may weather these a bit harder and lighten it for the next batch through.
