Charlie and I have been chatting recently about building up a Heresy-era force each with a view towards running some Horus Heresy events at the end of 2013.
We both have the "Betrayal" tome from Forgeworld and have been pawing through it over the past few weeks.
So this is a call out to any Fields of Blood readers that would like to join us and participate in this endeavour.
The intention is to build the army up over time rather than build an xxxx point force at the outset. This is because Forgeworld will be producing rules and models for different Legions as they release their books.
The "Betrayal" book has a standard Legion list and this will form the basis for all their list going forward.
So what do you have to do to participate:
1. Choose one of the 18 Legions to build a force for
2. Let me know and I can provide you with any details around the Legion list. I also have copies of all the White Dwarf "Index Astartes" articles from the early 2000s which detail history, colours, traits etc of the Legion plus examples of Heresy era colour scheme.
3. Build a 10 man Legion Tactical Squad (I can provide unit details)
4. Post pictures here of said squad by end of January
I don't think I can afford Forgeworld models but I'd like to give some Heresy conversions a go.
ReplyDeleteI have to go with Night Lords. Are there any Black Library books that cover there actions in the Heresy yet?
Some good short stories in Shadows of Treachery focusing on them
DeleteThe night loords books by Aaron Demski Bowden, while being freaking awesome, have snippets of preheresy stuff. Otherwise, heresy era short story books like suggested above
DeleteThanks guys!
DeleteSounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm tempted.
ReplyDeleteAs chatted about at Skitterleap, I'm in for sure.
ReplyDeleteImperial Fists defending Terra or Blood Angels on Signus Prime, any opinions on which I should do?
I really like the deadline of end of January for 1 squad, nice achievable goals for people wanting to participate.
I've been throwing around this idea as well. My only issue is what legion. And if I chose a legion that wasn't released yet there would not be any legion shoulder pads for them!
ReplyDeletejust use minimal glue on the shoulder pads so that when the actual shoulder pads come out it is easy enough to break the current pads off with out causing damage to the model.
DeleteIt looks at this stage like I am doing Sons of Horus, and Pete is doing Deathguard
ReplyDeleteIs Pete doing Death Guard a surprise to anyone?
DeleteCount me in, though I already have a large headstart with my world eaters

ReplyDeleteIm really liking the Horus Heresy novels and this idea sounds great. Im confused though - who and how do you buy the right models? Can you only buy from Forgeworld for the HH era or do you go with GW - (is it Chaos Marines for the traitor legions etc)
ReplyDeleteA little bit of greenstuffing work and converting can go a long way for building a heresy era force. Do some searches online and on youtube, there's a big community out there. Or flick me an email at davethebartender@windowslive.com and I'll give you a bunch of links.
DeleteDepends how purest you are John.
ReplyDeleteYou can use quite a lot of normal Space Marine figures - basically you should be using pre-Mk IV armour.
If you want really Heresy armour you can convert or buy Forgeworld.
For those who use eBay there is a lot of "Forgeworld" HH figures available at a discount to going FW direct.
For the purposes of this exercise use what you want but stick to pre-Heresy colour schemes and weapons loadouts.
Some armour run downs (from memory)
DeleteMk II armour was still common Pre heresy.
Mk III armour was a specialist suit and was no legion was ever fully equiped.
Mk IV armour was the main issue Pre Heresy, although Horus had after Ullanor made sure the traitor legions got preference. Commonly referred to as the pinnacle of Space Marine Armour.
Mk V 'Heresy' armour was a mix of all types, borrowing parts from all earlier types (and Mk VI) and included cheaper materials due to the ongoing war. It was never really an 'official' suit per say, but was the most common during the Heresy
Mk VI Corvus was the suit (helped designed by Raven Guard) to replace the Mk IV. This suit was actually introduced during the Horus Heresy so is perfectly valid to use on both sides.
Mk VII and VIII came about after the Horus Heresy, although where being developed at the time.
Forge World make kits for all the Mks II - VI, GW plastics are VII and VII's, although some (really) old GW kits where Mk VI
Thanks for the info :)
DeleteCheers thanks - although I havent got to them in the books yet Ive read a lot of the fluff online and really like the Wordbearers (and their colour scheme). Any recommendations and where to start? I see you guys talking about buying individual bits and bobs but would the Chaos Space Marines 10 men squad box be the way to go?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mywargame.com/tutorials/
ReplyDeleteProbably the place to go if you are thinking about converting the Marks of Power Armour from the regular range of plastics.
And Is this a case of all legions being represented or are double ups allowed?
@John - probably Space Marines rather than Chaos initially. I have some Chaos Shoulder Pads that I can look out for you...that would be as Chaos-y as I'd get initially. But check out the site Shadowmancer recommends - they'll have the necessary info.
ReplyDelete@Shadowmancer - Double ups allowed
Thanks guys
ReplyDelete@Jossy - first 1500 suits of Mk VI were delivered by Imperial Fists to Raven Guard (as per Deliverance Lost)
ReplyDeleteOne more question sorry - are we going with the Legions (1) as they were during the Heresy so MkIII, IV, V armour or (2) pre-heresy so MkI & II
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be predominantly MK IV Maximus as Imperial Fists liberated 12,000 suits from Mars right at the beginning of the outbreak of the Heresy, and they where already well equipped as far as the legions go.
DeleteI also plan to do at least one squad of Mk V and Mk VI to represent Heresy Veterans as the war progresses, as the books are all based on events during the Heresy.
At the very least it would be up to the beginning of the heresy, which includes mkIV, but I see no reason as to stop people stretching into the MKV era as well should they so wish.
ReplyDeleteIve ordered 1 lot of MkIII and 1 of MkIV and will do a 2nd lot of the same next year - so I can 1 squad all in MkIII and one in all MkIV
