Terra-Forming

I had a really productive day yesterday. Forgoing the opportunity for a couple of games, I spent the time preparing for Horned Rat in just over a week’s time.

In the last week the number of participants has swelled to 30/31. I am lucky in that I can borrow 14 tables from my club, the Warlords, but made sure that the two tables I have at home were in okay condition. Running these events over the past few years has allowed me to build up enough terrain so that participants are not required to bring any. Any surplus funds are re-invested in more (and better quality) terrain. I was originally expecting to have to provide 12 tables worth but with the increased numbers I wanted to make sure I had sufficient.

First up I went and bought the material for five new basecloths. Give you a clue, Anzac Day afternoon is not the time to visit Spotlight. I’m pretty sure that every 10 year old girl in Wellington was doing a bedroom makeover. Certainly Spotlight was doing a roaring trade in Taylor Swift curtains.

Secondly, I painted and based up 6-7 pieces of impassable terrain using the Garden of Morr. These just require flocking and they will be ready to go. I also painted up walls and fences to add to base with my buildings.

Lastly, I cut MDF base boards for the buildings I have either bought or put together and painted. There are four new ones for this event – a Tabletop World Merchant’s Townhouse, GW’s Skullvane Manse and the Elven Tower and Bestial Huts from Gale Force Nine.

Looking forward to finishing them all this weekend.

  1. We all really appreciate your efforts Pete. The terrain at every tournament is just fantastic.

I agree Spotlight is horrible, took my 5yr old there for some Craft stuff on ANZAC Day not good

  3. Super excited to be flying down for this one, my first flight for a tournament(I'm flying phobic so it's a big deal for me)....just a quick question: are you able to take your miniatures on the plane as carry on luggage? Or do they flip out because it's metal and has pointy bits?

    1. You'll be fine. They may ask you what the hell they are when they go through the scanner, and its good for a laugh.

It amuses me when they stop the conveyer and rescan my case with very confused looks on their faces.

  4. Should be fine, I've flown countless time with armies as hand luggage and never had an issue, domistic and international.

  5. Sorry you couldn't make it down for some games Pete it was a fun day. Really appreciate the work you do organising & supporting the local events with the scenery & everything else you do. In fact we would have been short of scenery ourselfs the other day if not for the scenery you gave me.

If it would help any I have painted & ready river sections, bridge, marsh & the couple of bits of difficult/impassible terrain you gave me I could bring.

  6. Part of the attraction of the game for me is the visual aspect so I dislike playing on tables with poor terrain. Coupled with this I really enjoy making terrain especially now with the kits GW have released and the buildings produced by Tabletop World.

  7. Holy cr@p there are Taylor Swift curtains??!!! I have to get me some of them...

Also, I don't think the Wgtn players know just how lucky they are with the standard of terrain set out for tournies. Not having to provide your own terrain and having quality terrain is something many tournies outside the likes of Maelstrom fail to achieve here in the UK. The SCGT was the biggest WHFB single event ever in the UK and players provided their own terrain which varied as much in quality as the players themselves.
